Contributor Portraits for Early Harvest Magazine
A dip pen, some ink, and a bunch of talented primary schoolers made for a fun portrait series.
The process
Context: Early Harvest is a dynamic program run by the 100 Story Building in Footscray, Victoria. The program gives upper-primary students an in-depth experience of the publishing process. Under the program, an editorial board of Year 5 and 6 students is brought together, who then publish an annual fiction publication. They select stories by other school age writers, and then have the opportunity to commission professional grown-up illustrators.
Brief: I was invited to make portraits of the board of editors for Early Harvest Issue 6. They were requested to be black & white, linework, and suited to small reproduction.
Approach: Working from portrait photos provided, I made sketches using my favourite flexible nib dip pen and Speedball Super Black india ink.
Result: The launch event was a barrel of fun, I got to meet the young editors and have them sign my copy of the magazine!
